The Mind Music Machine (tri-M) Lab is an interdisciplinary research group at Virginia Tech, drawing expertise from the Industrial and Systems Engineering, Computer Science, and Human-Centered Design programs. Our central research theme is the human Mind—encompassing both emotion and cognition. Music (encompassing sound and speech) serves as both our language and methodology, while Machinery (computers and systems) acts as both our research tool and a metaphor for understanding the mind.

The mission of our lab is twofold:

  1. To advance the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the human mind.

  2. To design and improve interactions between people and technology.

We approach these challenges from multiple levels: the psychological, through empirical experimentation; the neurological, using neuroergonomic measures; and the computational, via mathematical modeling.
